So Near So Far
About the "So Near So Far" series of improvisational performances:
"So Near So Far" takes its name from a piece on Miles Davis's 1963 album Seven Steps to Heaven. The title perfectly captures the essence of improvisation: the distance between musicians, audience, and art—so close, yet so far away. This is an improvisational music project exploring contemporary art, born from an eternal paradox: we may stand right next to each other yet feel worlds apart; we may be separated by oceans yet remain connected through sound.
The project brings together a group of young emerging improvisers and seasoned musicians who abandon fixed scores. Using "distance" as their central theme, they engage in dialogue through sound.
Performance Introduction:
What happens when a Chinese pioneer of experimental saxophone meets a Norwegian drum force from the deep underground? “So Near So Far” is the answer—a dialogue between two worlds, suspended between the intimate and the unknown.
Li Tieqiao, a defining voice in China's improvised music scene, pushes the saxophone to its breaking point. His bold, avant-garde approach tears down the walls of traditional jazz, exploring raw timbres and extended techniques. Dag Erik Knedal Andersen, hyperactive and intuitive, has spent two decades reshaping Norwegian improvisation. His drumming is organic, creative, and relentless.
Together, they create a music with no net. Improvisation is the law, jazz the memory, avant-garde the attitude, and experimental the faith. No electronics. No safety net. Just breath, skin, metal, and air. Hear two masters from opposite ends of the world meet in the space between near and far. So Near So Far.
